Environmental policy



1. Purpose

This policy outlines the procedures, requirements and responsibilities relating to environmental matters.

 

2. Scope

This policy is applicable to all that activities, products and services that Beam Construction Limited undertakes.

 

3. Policy

3.1 Beam Construction Limited will endeavour to remain well informed of all relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice and is committed to reducing its environmental impact.  The company will use the best practicable means at its disposal to achieve these objectives and to ensure that employees at all levels are aware of and are adequately instructed in the requirements of this legislation.

 

3.2 Whilst construction is in progress, the company shall take reasonable precautions that are consistent with clients’ instructions, against environmental damage, disruption or nuisance on or adjoining its sites.  It will endeavour to always keep its sites clean and tidy, along with adjoining areas that might be affected by traffic to and from those sites.

 

3.3 The company will take all reasonable steps to avoid the pollution of the air, ground or water by fume, dust, noise or disposal of construction materials.  It will take all reasonable steps to control materials or substances that may have a detrimental environmental impact.

 

3.4 The company will, wherever viable and consistent with its clients’ requirements, use materials and products from sustainable sources, are recyclable or have a reduced environmental impact.  The company will make every effort to conserve materials and energy and where practicable will collect its waste materials for recycling.

 

4. Responsibility

Terry Birchley (Director) is responsible for the company’s’ environmental performance and for setting and enforcing the company’s’ environmental policy.

Terry Evans (Director is responsible for providing advice regarding compliance with legislation, regulations and sector codes of practice.  Effectively, he is the acting Health and Safety Director.  He is also responsible for liaison with the relevant enforcing bodies.

All Staff are responsible for the implantation of this policy and the procedures, which arise out of it within their areas of responsibility.

An Environmental risk assessment will be carried out annually by the Health & Safety manager, in conjunction with other senior and junior managers and relevant members of staff, for the general operations that the company undertakes.  A report detailing the results of the environmental assessment will be submitted to the Senior Manager responsible for the Health and Safety.

Each annual assessment will include random inspection of a selected number of sites to ascertain current working practices.

 

5. Environmental Action Programme

The deputy to the Health & Safety manager shall, with assistance if necessary, develop and maintain environmental action programmes with respect to the company operations.  Each such plan shall attempt to address the priority issues identified in the environmental assessment, the ongoing or planned environmental projects, and any compliance problems.

 

6. Waste

No waste under the company’s control shall be passed for treatment, disposal, storage or other handling unless the company under the ‘Duty of Care’ is satisfied that the disposal is taking place in line with current legislation and sector codes of practice.  Before waste is handed over to an approved agent, a transfer note must have been completed.

 

7. Event Reporting

Any incident or other unplanned event, a spill or leak causing a release to the environment of a regulated waste or regulated substance, shall be reported in writing immediately to the Director responsible for Health and Safety, who shall  investigate and report back to the Environment Agency or other regulatory agency as necessary.

 

8. Prevention and Emergency Plans

The company shall maintain its prevention and emergency plan as part of the site Health and safety Plan and will include special procedures for response to emergencies caused by special wastes or substances (i.e. BA, PPE, spill control measures, etc) and the location of the main storage areas for substances stored on site.
